MLM and The Power of 5 – A Successful Philosophy.
There is much written about Multi Level Marketing, some good and some bad. The bad tends to focus on the failure of individuals with cetain products and companies that, frankly were never likely to succeed.
The first thing you must realise when faced with a MLM opportunity is that the ‘MLM’ partof it is just the business model the company has decided to use to get its product to market. So forget about the MLM and focus first on the product and its market.
Having considered the product and market and decided you are convinced both are sound then ask yourself if you are a sales guy, a people person or someone with enough contacts to build a team of 5.
Why 5?
Well I could have chosen a different number. But for me, there are only seven days in a week and with a team of five you will be working on 6 of them. So, if like me, you want a day of rest, then a team of five works best.
Now you must also understand that your team of 5 is a fluid beast. you will find that one or more of your team may slip by the wayside and will need to be replaced. We all start with excitement and good intentions but as with most things, not everything goes exactly to plan.
Choosing your Team of 5
For anyone who has considered a MLM before, this will sound familiar. but the best way to choose your team is to make a list of everyone you know. My personal twist on it is though, once you have made your initial list, whittle it down. if you start with 50, knock it down to 20, then 10, then 5. Consider all the traits of the people on your list….are they open-minded? Are they serious enough to want to earn? Do they have a network of contacts?
Keep your lists of 10, 20 & 50. These will be useful if you have to replace or move passed your best five choices.
Make the Presentation
You should present the opportunity to your top five in a meeting with all of them together. You are building a team who will work together, bounce off each other and support each others efforts. Invite them round, but keep it formal. Tell them that you are starting a new business venture and are looking to build a team of five people to work together and of all of the people you know…they are the five you would most like to work with and you would like them on your team. Most people respond well to flattery so they will be feeling good about them selves from the off.
Know Your Market
After the presentation, video etc, there will be questions. make sure you have done enough background work to be able to answer them. Know you back office website, the literature, the likely negative questions. Know the answers to the ‘pyramid scheme’ questions. have the facts at hand and then finally, introduce them to the Power of 5.
The Power of 5
The power of five is a six people team plan that every team member must commit to if they are going to join their team. If any member doesn’t want to commit, then you move onto the next on your shortlist of ten. If any member of your team fails to stick to the plan, you replace them. They may become an auxillary member of your downline but will be outside your Team of 5.
The rules of your team are simple:
1. Each member will follow your lead and produce a team of 5 that they will lead.
2. Each member will meet, assist and act as support for each of their team for at least 1 day a week. ( You can start to see where your 6 days are going to get filled)
3. Each member will meet with you on the sixth day (i.e. you meet with your team of 5 once a week and be available to assist each member of your team build his team of 5 for 1 day a week.)
As you team leader you need to have the answers for your team members. Eventually each member of your team will be his own team leader, so they need also do the research and knowledge gathering, but you as their team leader will be there first point of reference. If you dont know an answer….you go to your enroller or upline. (oops…there goes your day of rest!! You will be meeting with your upline team on day 7. ( It’s called being self-employed…its a 24/7 kind a thing, but you get to choose the hours you work and the hours you play)
Time Management
managing your time is key. Set your meetings well in advance and try at all costs to keep to your schedule. Expect your team to do the same and teach them to schedule early. A team member who consistently breaks a schedule and tries to change meetings is not serious enough about the business to be a member of your 5. Look to replace them. Otherwise you will be doing more work trying to fit in with them and they will not be worth it…..This is your team and you need to know when to cut someone.
